Why Linux?

On the next presentation we will suggest you some of the Linux based OS distributions. We cannot make a revue of all of the major distros, bu we can try instead to have your attention for some of the most reliable and easy to use Linux operating systems ever, as a serious, free and secure alternative to Windows Desktops.

I have read somewhere on the Internet that Microsoft Windows is selling you at a very high price the "windows" only, while Linux community is offering you, for free, the entire house... Nice words, and true - Windows is only the operating system, and you must add all the software you need separately; but installing a Linux operating system means, usually, installing in only one shot about 98% all the software you'll ever need.

Obviously, the choice for one or another Linux distribution is entirely yours. But please, keep in mind, the step from Windows to Linux is a big one, in your way to legality, security and reliability when using a PC, at home or at work.

Also, we do think it is a better choice to keep an open mind, instead of an open pocket...

If you still wish to use the famous Microsoft Windows, that means it is the time for you to visit our other IT Security links.

Ubuntu Linux Desktop

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

Ubuntu team is issuing a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Everything you need on one CD, which provides a complete working environment. Additional software is available on line.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop you have a full set of productivity, Internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.

Opensuse Linux

The openSUSE project is a worldwide community program sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. The program provides free and easy access to openSUSE. Here you can find and join a community of users and developers, who all have the same goal in mind — to create and distribute the world's most usable Linux. openSUSE also provides the base for Novell's award-winning SUSE Linux Enterprise products.

The 11.0 release of openSUSE includes more than 200 new features specific to openSUSE, a redesigned installer that makes openSUSE even easier to install, faster package management thanks to major updates in the ZYpp stack, and KDE 4, GNOME 2.22, Compiz Fusion, and much more.

Open Suse is free to use, and an excellent Linux distribution regarding the security and reliability

Fedora Linux

On the Fedora description site, Fedora team say:

Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that provides users with access to the latest free and open source software, in a stable, secure and easy to manage form. We strongly believe in the bedrock principles that created all the components of our operating system, and because of this we guarantee that Fedora will always be free for anybody, anywhere, to use, modify and distribute.

Fedora has long been a center for innovation in free and open source software and places high emphasis on creating a community where developers and open source enthusiasts come together to advance free and open source software. The Fedora community contributes everything it builds back to the free and open source world and continues to make advances of significance to the broader community, as evidenced by the regular and rapid incorporation of its features into other Linux distributions.

Fedora is more than just software, though. It is a community of contributors from around the world who work with each other to advance the interests of the free culture movement. Everyone is invited to join, and no matter what your skills are, we have a place for you in our community! The Fedora community includes software engineers, artists, system administrators, web designers, writers, speakers, and translators -- all of whom will be happy to help you get started.
